Xero Review 2026 — Best Accounting Software for Singapore SMEs?

Updated March 2026 · 8 min read · Tested in Singapore

Our Verdict

4.8 / 5

Xero is the best accounting software for most Singapore SMEs. GST-ready out of the box, DBS/OCBC/UOB bank feeds work seamlessly, and genuinely easy to use without an accounting degree. Pricier than Zoho Books, but worth it for any business billing above SGD $5,000/month.

We used Xero for three months with a real Singapore-registered business — running invoices, filing GST, connecting bank feeds, and doing payroll. Here is what actually matters.

Who Is Xero For?

Xero is built for small and medium businesses that want proper accounting without hiring a full-time accountant. It is particularly strong for Singapore companies because of deep local bank integrations and GST 9% compliance built natively into every invoice and report.

If you are a freelancer billing a handful of clients, Zoho Books is cheaper and sufficient. If you run a business with employees, multiple income streams, or need to file GST quarterly, Xero is worth every dollar.

Pros and Cons

What We Liked

  • DBS, OCBC, UOB bank feeds — automatic daily sync
  • GST 9% built into every invoice and report
  • Clean, intuitive interface
  • 1,000+ integrations (Stripe, Shopify, PayNow)
  • Strong mobile app
  • Unlimited users on all plans

What Could Be Better

  • More expensive than Zoho Books
  • Payroll is a paid add-on
  • Starter plan: 20 invoices/month cap
  • Email-only support, no live chat

Singapore Bank Integrations

This is where Xero wins over every competitor for Singapore businesses. Bank feeds with DBS, OCBC, UOB, Standard Chartered, and Maybank work automatically — transactions appear within 24 hours, ready to match to invoices and expenses. We tested DBS and OCBC personally. Both worked without issues for the full three months.

GST Filing

Xero handles GST 9% natively. Every invoice automatically calculates GST, and the GST F5 report for IRAS is generated with one click. We filed two quarters during our test with zero issues. Your accountant can log in directly — no need to export and email spreadsheets.

Final Recommendation

For most Singapore SMEs, Xero on the Standard plan is the right choice. The bank feeds alone save hours of manual reconciliation every month. GST filing becomes a non-event. If budget is your primary concern, Zoho Books is a legitimate alternative at half the price — but if you are billing multiple clients monthly, Xero pays for itself quickly.
